Article Abstract:
Personnel assessment tools should be analyzed carefully to ensure that they are not culturally biased. To eliminate cultural bias in content, test developers usually subject their test to panels of reviewers who remove items that may be unfamiliar or may have a different meaning for people of different cultural backgrounds. Unfortunately, personnel tests are not checked as thoroughly for culturally handicapping language, which is another source of cultural bias. Tests should be made to undergo a language screening process called 'sociolinguistic item analysis' to minimize the influence of the linguistic differences among job applicants on their test performance. This process not only ensures culture-fairness, but it also improves the readability and utility of tests.
