Article Abstract:
Research found that there were signifiant differences between countries in a comparison of workers' appraisal of their managers' performance. Employees of multinational companies are often requested to rate their immediate supervisors in order to establish the quality of working relationships. Some 6,400 workers in ten different countries were sent a questionnaire. The returned data showed that managers in different countries were found to be highly rated on specific aspects of their performance such as German managers, who were rated as having very high expectations of their staff.

Recent research has used Greece as a reference point in considering the role of human resource management in the reduction of staffing levels. It was found that human resource managers at large companies can play a valuable part in implementing redundancies. They can act as a link between top managers, line managers and labour unions, and can ensure that internal and external outplacement and inplacement services are provided.

Human resource management in the US is closer to traditional personnel than it is in the UK. The most significant change in focus has been a greater emphasis on psychology. At present, the status of human resource departments is quite low. Similar fluctuations in status have been experienced by UK human resource departments.
