Cross-cultural analysis of business ethics: Hong Kong and American business personnel

Article Abstract:

American managers must have a keen understanding of cultural differences to be able to develop long-term relationships with Hong Kong businessmen. A cross-cultural analysis of business ethics in Hong Kong and the US indicates differences in perceptions of ethical business conduct in the two countries. These differences are traced to the rapidly changing conditions in Hong KOng, differences in management control, the importance of complex business relationships and harmony in Chinese culture and the tendency of the Chinese to embrace multiple standards.

Cultural characteristics or reliability enhancing organizations

Article Abstract:

Well-managed organisations need clearly developed cultures to avoid errors which may result in disastrous consequences. Management techniques include formal and informal training, leadership, reinforcement of the organisations' rules and regulations, constant monitoring of reliability performance and incentives. Errors occur due to reductions in staffing levels, training and safety checks, poor management and the lack of motivation. Organisations researched included the US Navy's aircarriers, the USS Enterprise and the USS Carl Vinson.
