Perkin-Elmer Corp (Norwalk, CT) uses a 'Quality Business Plan' (QBP) to make quality improvements, upgrade products, cut costs, and meet its competition. The analytical instrument manufacturer has used QBP to achieve significant savings in four areas: design, field performance, management, and design. The lead-time on the majority of Perkin-Elmer products has been reduced by at least 25%, cut set-up time by 80%, reduced defects by 85% to 90%, and cut standard-hour time by 15% to 20%. The cost-cutting, quality control efforts of Miller Brewing Co are also described.

A case study on the means by which employers can induce important behavioral changes in employees to lessen the cost of prescription drug purchases has revealed the value of certain low-cost and easy behavior modifications. Through collective gathering of needed information, its circulation aming employees and creating incentives employers can cause changes in employee behavior regarding drug purchase. However, study results can only be generalized within a specific subgroup although the same education and incentives could lead to similar long-term cost savings.

A supervisor's job is to make sure his workers are doing their job correctly which in turn will make profits for the company. The supervisor should set an example for his workers and they will follow. Ways a supervisor can make his workers become better profitmakers are examined. The supervisor's greatest challenge is being able to use his human resources most effectively.
