Statistics used by Professor Leo Troy are further examined. The data, found in Verma and Thompson (1989), are used to conclude that management surveyed in Canada accept bargaining and union, while Troy queries this conclusion. Verma and Thompson's research involved questioning management in 85 companies in Canada on their labour relation policies. The companies had 54% average union density, employed about 810,000 people and were sited in five Canadian provinces. Just 16% of the companies were owned by US firms. Troy assumes that research which shows that US employers are more opposed to collective bargaining and unionism than Canadian employers is incorrect.

Article Abstract:
The residual power and influence of trade unions which operate in the UK coal industry following privatization on New Year's Day 1995 can be determined by looking at the extent to which privatization has marginalized trade unionism and had a negative impact on employee solidarity. The very strict management style used by British Coal has had a significant impact on many of the most important industrial relations features seen in the privatized coal industry. It is unlikely that employees in smaller coal companies will undertake industrial action, but there is a danger of unrest at RJB Mining.

Article Abstract:
Manchester Airport, England, has carried out competitive tendering for baggage handling. The labor unions at the airport have changed their approach in the 1990s compared with the 1980s. Shop stewards have been under pressure to accept the policies of management due to a change in the economic climate. Further research could be carried out on the effectiveness of different types of response to such moves by management. There are still tensions in the relations between management and other employees and this indicates that there has not been a major change in labor relations.
