Caring for volunteers

Article Abstract:

Volunteer workers form a significant part of the UK economy in areas including charity shop work, hospital services, and help for disabled people. They face risks to their safety and health which are often given little consideration either by the volunteer, due to their high level of motivation, or by the organisation. The law is unclear on the status of volunteer workers, but a health and safety consultant warns that failure to protect their health and safety could damage the reputation of the organisation concerned. He recommends guidelines for safety management.
