Against the 401(k) tide: the successful ERISA experience of one multiemployer plan

Article Abstract:

The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) has been viewed by many plan sponsors as a bane to the existence of defined benefit plans, but one pension fund does not think so. The Central Pension Fund (CPF) of the International Union of Operating Engineers and Participating Employers has not only survived, but more importantly, thrived under ERISA. Specifically, administrative burdens associated with the act were accommodated while costs were kept down by the CPF due to ERISA's provisions.
