The need to address electrostatic discharge through a series of duties placed on operates' manufacturing sites and the original equipment manufactures of plant and equipment (OEMs) has been recognized. The use of chemicals and other fluids capable of generating static buid-up that have inherently low conductivity. This can have several implications, electrostatic shock being the most obvious one. Repeated sparking can also damage equipment by causing surface pitting of the vessels or pipe.

The challenge facing employers lies in being confident that employees are using the training effectively to maximize their own and others, health and safety. In order to ensure that the staff changes its working practices, a training plan can be constructed that begins with a foundation-level training and all staff should be consulted on potential issues and solutions, encouraging them to raise any concerns with employers and playing an active part in the health and safety implementation.

Health and safety is improved in 700,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the European funding scheme. The SME Funding Scheme, run by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work helped over 50 projects to improve health and safety.
