People with a mental or physical impairment that have substantial, long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities are aimed to be protected by the Disability Discrimination Act. It is estimated by the National Statistics Office that one in five people of working age in the United Kingdom have a long-term disability, of whom just over half are economically active.
