Abuse on increase for NHS staff

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by Healthcare Commission on NHS staff revealed that 37%of respondents were bullied by their colleagues, 14% of respondents were physically attacked in the year 2004 and 1% reported experiencing violence from their colleagues. In response to the survey, Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary stated that practical measures present should be supported by penalties so that violence in the healthcare sector could be reduced.

Speakers at the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) annual conference emphasized that effective health risk communication is an important safety tool that can modify inappropriate public reactions that accompany occupational and environmental health issues and allegations. The goal of risk communication is to ensure that the public fully understand risk and are enabled to make informed decisions under conditions of uncertainty.

Article Abstract:

The costs and benefits of rehabilitation and return-to-work schemes and their role within the UK's insurance system are discussed. The use of rehabilitation is seen by many as a means to improve the effectiveness of personal injury compensation and reduce costs by impacting on claims' size and frequency.
