Article Abstract:

The factors responsible for the growth of self-directed retirement plans, which includes at least three investment alternatives with varied risk and return features, are analyzed. The trend toward participant investment choices in 401(k) plans is considered unhealthy, especially in the light of the US Department of Labor's 404(c) guidelines. A more disciplined approach to 401(k)/404(c) retirement plan administration is deemed as more appropriate and instead proposed.

An Employee Benefits Research Institute survey revealed that employees plan to save with 40% of their retirement income coming from their own savings and investments. Three key messages can be given by employers to keep saving levels desirable to all employees.

Ten principles of adult learning are discussed within the context of designing an effective information package for a retirement savings plan. These principles can help bridge the gap between Americans' motivation to save for retirement and their seeming reluctance to participate in defined contribution plans.
