There were many new products a+ the New York Tabletop and Accessories show, and retailers, optimistic about the rise in consumer spending, were buying heavily. Many were looking at upscale fashion-oriented dinnerware. That, combined with the sharp price deals led one merchant to label it "a buyer's market."

Article Abstract:

Specialty stores will have sales spurt and squeeze out department stores - the more educated consumer of the '80s will move to top quality products and more knowledgeable sales people which department stores can't provide.
