Pieced quilting can be traced to 18th-century England and Holland. American women improved the practice by developing the block-style pieced quilt, the most famous of which is the Log Cabin. Pieced quilt patterns are known by many other evocative names including Spider Web, Schoolhouse and Bow Tie.

New England Indian baskets

Article Abstract:

New England Indians are noted for their intricately designed baskets. These items were first made for personal use but starting in the 19th century, Indians began to sell these to white settlers. Since then, basketmaking, both of the decorative and utilitarian variety, has become a craft.

Nantucket lightship baskets

Article Abstract:

The Nantucket basket first appeared in the 1840s as an offshoot of the barrel-making industry. Sturdy and functional, the baskets came in a variety of designs but all had riven oak bottoms, upright vertical staves, hooped rims and rattan caning.
