U.S. furniture exports fell by 10% to $1.5 billion in 2002. This figure represented under 11% of imported furniture. Exports had dropped in 2001 by 16%.

Drexel Heritage has provided small-group counselling to its workers in the aftermath of a shooting incident that left two employees dead and three others wounded. The company, which manufactures drawers, dimension stock and other furniture components at its Black Mountain, NC, facility where the shootings took place, has also enlisted the aid of local area ministers to provide on-site counselling and home visits. Drexel, which has restarted production on Sep. 28, 1998, plans to let its workers adjust gradually in the wake of the tragic event.
