Venetian carpets were a fashionable household decor in the early 1700s. Initially imported from England, colorful striped carpet was later produced in America by family and professional weavers. Made of woven strips sewn together, its main feature was its vivid stripes colored by organic dyes.

In the 17th century, European emigrants making the more than 3,000-mile journey to North America had to endure harsh conditions at sea. Many died without without even completing the Atlantic crossing. Emigrants were also often victimized by ship owners and captains or even sold into slavery.
