The recent Market Showplace at the Stampede Grounds in Calgary, Alberta, reflected the strong optimism of furniture and bedding manufacturers over orders from retailers, despite the lighter traffic of visitors during the affair. Exhibitors at the show also refused to place huge order projections for the year from retailers based in the Lower Mainland, due to the Asian crisis that is affecting the economic prospects of British Columbia for 1998. However, retailers from the remaining Western provinces exhibited confidence over the economy following the strong rains that would revitalize farmers' harvest for the year.
