A federal Christmas at the John Jay homestead

Article Abstract:

New York State houses the retirement home of the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Jay. Jay built the Bedford house in 1801 for his wife, Sarah, and their five children. Christmas at the Jay homestead included sleigh rides, afternoon teas, formal dinner parties and evening frolics.

Clement Moore and the "Night Before Christmas." (biography of the author of the poem)

Article Abstract:

Dr. Clement Clarke Moore wrote in 1822 the poem 'Night Before Christmas' which later fascinated readers. Although it was not until 1838 that Moore acknowledged the authorship, his poem paved the way for the various depictions of St. Claus in paintings and drawings.
