12 days and 184 birds

Article Abstract:

'The Twelve Days of Christmas' is believed to have begun as a game song and was first printed in 1868. The jolly Christmas carol, which some argue is actually a love song, talks of 184 birds of six different species which someone received from her true love. All the birds are fertility symbols.

The domestication of animals has a very long history in North America. Both native Americans and early European settlers kept domesticated animals. They kept them either as pets or fas work animals. Many early American paintings attest to the importance of pets in North American life.
