There is a growing necessity to exchange information on collectibles because of the proliferation of reproductions, copycats, fantasies and fakes. There is currently no national database tracking these, so collectors should share what information they have with the trade papers.

Fred Waring's estate auction in Shawnee, PA, did not yield the same level of bids compared with the auction for Jacqueline Onassis's estate. This may be attributed to the absence of publicity and differences in the geographical location of the auctions.

Where the problem really lies

Article Abstract:

Antiques and collectibles dealers who charge the same price for reproductions and copycats as they do for period pieces have proliferated. Such unscrupulous dealers need to be exposed and punished for deliberately deceiving buyers.
