Article Abstract:

Louis Schmidt found a 1918 photograph of her father-in-law building the home in which he and subsequent generations of Schmidts would live. He used a team of horses to pull dirt out of a basement excavation with a scoop instead of a front-end loader.

Airplanes were of great interest to the American people following World War I. Biplanes had been used for the first time in military operations. In 1919, pilots began to use them for recreational purposes to sell rides to those who had never flown.
