Hampton Court's great show

Article Abstract:

The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is the largest of its kind in Britain, with approximately 800 exhibitors. The Hampton show differs from the better known Chelsea Flower Show in that it allows nearly all of its displays to be on sale from the beginning of the show, rather than wait until the last day.

Darwin & and the earthworms: these lowly creatures ranked high in the scientist's affections

Article Abstract:

Darwin was fascinated by the behavior of earthworms and the impact they had on creating a vegetable mould in soil. He observed how their digestive systems absorbed vegetable debris, mulched it internally and then expelled it in fine fragments, a benefit to fertilizing soil.

Shear whimsy

Article Abstract:

Topiary is about shaping trees into any green objects of one's fancy. Although the practice has been admired and rejected at turns, 'architectural' hedging does provide magnificent attractions. The dark, rich and easy-to-clip yew has remained the tree of choice for topiary.
