After the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, many sought refuge in their gardening. Others found visiting public gardens to be soothing and public gardens in New York and the gardens at the Horticultural Society's River Farm, not far from the Pentagon, saw high numbers of visitors.

January and February are still busy months for the gardener. Garden and landscape plans need to be made and seeds should be ordered. When the weather allows for outside activity, pruning and clearing of fallen objects can take place.
