An oasis in Nevada

Article Abstract:

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada is fed by an underground aquifer that creates marshes and wetlands in the otherwise dry Mojave desert. The area was given reserve status in the 1950s, but mining in the 1970s led to the introduction of many non-native species. In 1984, the Nature Conservancy bought and donated the land to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Ash Meadows was designated a wildlife refuge. Six plant species there have been deemed endangered, but a plan for protecting and restoring the native plants, fish, and animals was started in 1990.
