Several approaches to combining bulbs with herbaceous perennials, shrubs, and trees to an already existing garden after assessing various factors such as exposure to sun, and acidity or salinity of the soil is presented. Several guidelines for selecting appropriate herbaceous perennials, their companions, ground cover and selecting bulbs is presented.

Gardening with moisture loving plants is the natural solution for a wet area of yard with poor drainage. Tropical plants are ideal for warm climates and many bulb plants prefer wet soil. Some bog-loving plants include calla lilies, cannas, iris and elephant's ear.
