'Half-dolls' were porcelain half-figurines that topped tea cozies, trinket boxes, whisk brooms and lamp shades, but were never used as playthings or dolls. These attractive collectibles were made from the 1920s to the 1950s, and most sell for about $20 to $100.

The proper identification of dolls whose original makers are unknown can now be undertaken. The 'German Doll Encyclopedia' of Jurgen and Marianne Cieslik contains records of mold numbers and design patents of many of these 'mystery maker' dolls.

The popularity of actors and actresses spawned an industry of dolls made in their image. Some actors licensed the dolls which were dressed in costumes based on their most famous films, particularly those made in the period between 1910 and 1960.
