Built-in spotmeters in single lens reflex cameras offer advantages over center-weighted and multi-pattern exposure readings. The photographer can decide exactly which areas to meter in conjunction with exposures for highlights and shadows. Careful meter interpretation is important.

Photographer Tim Macmillan tired of the same rectangular image provided by single lens reflex cameras. He created various devices which are essentially slit cameras. They are similar to panoramic cameras which 'wipe' the image across the film, either automatically or manually.
