The 1995 American Federation of Mineralogical Societies' annual convention and exhibit will be sponsored by the Idaho Gem Club in Boise, ID, in Jul. 1995. One of the major attractions in the exhibit will be the 44,772-carat faceted smoky quartz called the 'Lady.'

Opal fever in a wheat field

An opal-mining rush began in Washington after the 1890 discovery of opals by a Whitman County farmer digging a well. However, water and hard rock complicated the mining and the opal industry died with the Panic of 1893.
