People who are planning to buy a boat should first identify their priorities including costs and the desired power, style and capabilities of the boat. Inboard and outboard gas-powered boats differ in the types and sizes of engine used, costs and maintenance needs. Inboards offer better fuel economy while outboards offers top speed and power.

The 1997 Mercury Hi-Performance stern drives and outboard motors are evaluated. Among its new line of stern drives are the HP 500 Bulldog and the HP 525SC, both of which have large cubic-inch displacement ratings. Its outboard line includes the Sportmaster.

Boaters have a choice between an engine with a carburetor or electronic fuel injection (EFI). The main advantage of carbureted engines is their price while EFI motors offer regulated fuel flow and sharp acceleration.
