A brief history of stamp printing in the US is given as it relates to private companies printing stamps under contract for the government. Proofs were test pieces in stamp printing. Until the US took over printing, much was unregulated and proofs were easy to get. Many are commonplace.

Recollections of the Kansas-Nebraska issues

Article Abstract:

A history of the 1929 issues with their overprints of 'Kans' or 'Nebr' is recounted. At first mistaken for precancels, the first day covers were eagerly sought. The aim of the overprint was to thwart robberies, but the practice was soon abandoned. Today, fakes may be offered.

Stamp collectors, philatelists and stamp dealers are all somewhat different. Of the three, the collectors should be having the most fun. A collection of jokes and witticism about stamp collecting is presented.
