A brief history of stamp printing in the US is given as it relates to private companies printing stamps under contract for the government. Proofs were test pieces in stamp printing. Until the US took over printing, much was unregulated and proofs were easy to get. Many are commonplace.

A history of the 1929 issues with their overprints of 'Kans' or 'Nebr' is recounted. At first mistaken for precancels, the first day covers were eagerly sought. The aim of the overprint was to thwart robberies, but the practice was soon abandoned. Today, fakes may be offered.
