Article Abstract:

A visit to the Upper Burma region of Myanmar, where jade is mined, is described. Mining is an inefficient and labor intensive operation in Myanmar that does great damage to the mountain environment. Government repression following the military coup in 1962 has touched all parts of life in Myanmar.

The Smithsonian's new gem hall

Article Abstract:

The new Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History houses the most extensive and expensive collection of gems and minerals in the world. Around $14 mil were spent to construct the grand hall.

On crystal shores

Article Abstract:

Most people do not realize that beaches and sands are precious for they may not only contain quartz particles but also tiny, colorful crystals called gems. This type of sand has been discovered all the world and has been termed gem sand.
