There are a number of ways to make tag-and-release fishing less harmful to gamefish. These include handling the fish with wet hands to avoid peeling off scales, which expose fish to opportunistic pathogens. Another tip is to cut the line if the fish has swallowed the hook.

Experienced professional sportfishermen are fairly accurate at estimating the weight of billfish that are caught, tagged and released, but some captains and crews overestimate weight. The satisfaction of releasing a big fish is more important than the exact weight.
