FDCs attract many collectors

Article Abstract:

Collecting first day covers, envelopes with cancellations on the same day the stamp was issued, is popular. The covers can be obtained at ceremonies that accompany the first day of stamp issuing. Few of the covers go through the mail, but those that do are more nostalgic.

The history and evolution of the US Postal Service and its services is presented. The first postal service was founded in Pennsylvania in 1683 by William Penn. More famous postmaster generals and services are described.

Postal stationery
