Electronic chart systems are important devices that can aid in efficient navigation. Affordable chart plotters with built-in software that powers electronic charts can be used in the absence of a computerized system. However, paper charts should also be prepared in cases of power failures.

Two types of electronic chart plotting systems are available; vectorgraphic and reprographic. A recreational boater who has used both systems reports that although both function well he gives a slight edge to the reprographic Maptech system.
