Dating covers is the sport of postal historians

Bits of postal history can be revealed when dates of old envelopes are researched. A postal historian offers tips on how to date a mailing. Researching when a stamp was issued, and the history of any business in the return address are two ways to find information on the date of a cover.

Cancel dated on the eve of time zone incorporation
Article Abstract:
A cover from 1883 was seemly uninteresting until it was given a closer examination. Nov 17, 1883 was the last day of problems between Canada and the US over local time. The next day, Nov 18, the convention for the four time zones was established. The old cover was dated Nov. 17, 1883.

Eagle & shield not uncommon for early 1860's covers
Article Abstract:
A description of the research done to ascertain the authenticity of the cover with the Eagle and Shield, was recounted. The envelope, its stamp, cover art and franking is described. The original letter was probably written by an Union Army soldier to someone back in Ohio.
