Abner Doubleday codified baseball's rules

Article Abstract:

Doubleday is credited with playing the first game of baseball with school friends in Cooperstown, NY in 1839. In 1939 the centennial was celebrated with the issuing of over 81 million commemorative stamps. Doubleday's life, including his stint as a solder in the Mexican War, in briefly recounted.

Black Hills national monuments

Article Abstract:

Mt Rushmore National Monument in the Black Hills of South Dakota was designed by Gutzon Borglum. Construction started in 1927 and completed in 1941. Sculpting the four presidents' heads out of a granite mountain was dangerous and arduous work. Stamps commemorating Mt Rushmore are presented.

Black heritage on U.S. first days

Article Abstract:

Three commemorative stamps feature jazz pioneer Duke Ellington, Ragtime pianist Scott Joplin, and singer Ethel Waters. Recalling these musicians and their accomplishments contributes to the observation of Black History Month in February 1995.
