Sylvia Earle has prioritized the advance of marine botany knowledge over personal safety. She was leader of the all-woman Tektite II project for which she and other scientists stayed underwater for two weeks. Earle's 1979 1,250-foot dive to the sea floor for specimens is the deepest ever recorded.
