Article Abstract:

Archer began his public career as a school teacher and was elected mayor of Detroit, MI in 1993 succeeding Colman Young. He has also been an associate justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. The rebuilding of Detroit's economic base was the theme of his campaign. His actions and plans for change are discussed.

Ritchie and Thompson codeveloped the Unix operating system and the C programming language, which secured for them the National Medal for Technology in Dec 1998. They are working for Bell Telephone Laboratories, which is owned by Lucent Technologies.
