Article Abstract:
Andrew Sarris's work "The American Cinema: Directors and Directions, 1929-1968" made auteur theory the dominant mode of American film criticism in the 1960s, radically challenging the prevailing critical hierarchy with its three-tiered categorization of direction and their oeuvres. Sarris's career in film criticism spanned more than half a century, a majority of it as the primary film critic for the "Village Voice", and includes several published auteur studies and film surveys.
