Leslie Abramson is a staunch defender of the innocent and a hardline critic of capital punishment. She has been fairly successful in helping her clients avoid the death penalty in California. Abramson wrote an influential book entitled 'The Defense Is Ready: Life in the Trenches of Criminal Law,' which was published in 1997.

Slater, who had been raised in one of the poorest counties in US, was appointed as secretary of transportation in Feb 1997. His political career includes his position as executive secretary from 1983-1987 of then-Gov Bill Clinton of Arkansas and as an adviser on Clinton's presidential bid in 1992.
