West Nile virus infection among turkey breeder farm workers -- Wisconsin, 2002

Article Abstract:

Ten people at a turkey farm in Wisconsin were found to be infected with West Nile virus after two of the workers became ill. The other eight workers were identified by blood tests. Ninety-six percent of 135 female turkeys at the farm also tested positive for West Nile virus. If the turkeys were infected first, it is not clear how the virus was transmitted to the workers.

Interim guidelines for the evaluation of infants born to mothers infected with West Nile virus during pregnancy

Article Abstract:

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a single stranded RNA flavivirus, which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Flavivirus infection may cause immediate abortion or neonatal illness and so clinical recommendations in order to check the infants born to mothers with WNV infection are presented.

The physical symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of West Nile virus are reviewed. The virus was first identified in the northeastern US in 1999 and may spread to other parts of the country.
