Validity of food intake measurement of adult Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

A study of 69 Turkish immigrant men and women aged between 18 and 59 years revealed their energy intake (EI) basal metabolic rate (BMR) ratio to be 1.34, which fails to meet the World Health Organization's set standard of 1.55 for energy requirements of sedentary people. The body weight of the participants increased during the survey period, revealing the possibility of inaccuracy in the determined energy intake rates. Obese people inaccurately revealed their energy intake rates, affecting the validity of the studied food intake rates.

Nutrients and contaminants in human milk from mothers on macrobiotic and omnivorous diets

Article Abstract:

Alternative dietary habits and prolonged lactation were studied to determine their effects on nutrient and contaminant concentration. Macrobiotic diets were found to decrease concentrations of protein, zinc, vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium and saturated fatty acids. Meat and dairy products increase dieldrin and polychlorinated biphenyls while smoking adds to dichlorodiphenyl trichloro-ethane (DDT). Breast milk contamination can be avoided by abstinence from smoking and moderate intake of meat products.

Pilot trial of the effects of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid on platelet thromboxane B2 production

Article Abstract:

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised, cross-over study disclosed that acetylsalicylic acid checks the production of platelet endoperoxide thromboxane B2 and inhibits platelet aggregation by reducing platelet cyclo-oxygenase activity and aids in preventing cardiovascular diseases. A daily intake of 3 mg of acetylsalicylic acid by the subjects reduced the platelet thromboxane B2 production by 39 plus/minus 8%.
