Fifty-three Americans developed monkeypox after handling infected pet prairie dogs as of June 10, 2003. Monkeypox is a viral infection similar to smallpox that normally occurs in Africa. It was traced to an exotic animal facility in Illinois that housed prairie dogs together with an imported Gambian giant rat. The CDC has placed an immediate embargo on the importation of rodents from Africa and also prohibits the interstate transport and sale of prairie dogs.
