Update in geriatrics

Article Abstract:

Several studies have addressed primary, hospital, and nursing home health care issues of the elderly. Studies have addressed the effective use of alendronate in treating osteoporosis, identifying risk for dementia, and the importance of weight loss in preventing heart disease. Other studies have shown that simple gross motor testing can effectively predict future disability and that routine home visits to the elderly may delay the need for institutional care. Studies have also addressed a team approach to elderly hospital care, health costs associated with an increasing elderly population, and pneumonia and incontinence issues.

Update in geriatrics

Article Abstract:

Reports of important research in geriatrics published in 1996 are discussed. Many elderly patients with hyperthyroidism may have symptoms of hypothyroidism. Those with asymptomatic hypothyroidism may not require treatment. Alpha-blockers are effective in treating benign prostate enlargement and many elderly heart attack patients are now receiving aspirin to prevent a recurring heart attack. Walking can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and risk factors for falls and functional decline following hospitalization were identified. Elderly heart attack patients are less likely to receive thrombolytic drugs.
