Unequal treatment

Article Abstract:

Ethnic minorities are experiencing wide-spread racial discrimination from patients, management and colleagues within the NHS. On average it takes five more years for black and Asian nursing and midwifery staff in grades C and D to reach grades F and G in comparison to white staff. Unison's deputy head of health, Malcolm Wing, says that the equal opportunities policy is not put into practice. Management seminars are being given to focus on this problem area, with the aim of improving ethnic minority employment issues.

Article Abstract:

Nurses at the Leicester General Hospital National Health Service Trust, in the United Kingdom, are being encouraged to take on more responsibility for the decisions made within their hospitals by opting to sit on decision-making councils. There are four councils and the nurses attend one for a year. They take two hours off work each month to go to these meetings. Nurses views are important because they have most contact with patients. The aim of the councils is to improve the standard of patient care.

Primary movers

Article Abstract:

The UK government's plans for reform of the National Health Service (NHS) will involve midwives and community nurses linking with local GPs to set up primary care groups. Each group will be responsible for purchasing health care services from acute and community trusts. The groups will be obliged to work with health authorities to develop innovative ways of delivering care, and could eventually become provider units by merging with community trusts.
