Underwhelming responses

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Central Council (UKCC) for nursing is launching a review into why only 13% of members voted in its 1997 council election. This turnout occurred despite an earlier survey in which 95% of members had acknowledged the importance of the regulatory body, and despite UKCC commitment to raising the profile of both the UKCC and of council membership. Trade union records indicate that lower voting turnouts occur when voters do not know the people they are voting for, and when there is a longer period in which to vote.

Midwives' big break: the RCM has been upbeat about the pay deal it has struck with the NHS Executive but, many believe the college is naive to think trusts will abide by it

Article Abstract:

The RCM has accepted local deals that may leave lower-paid members better off, but has been accused of selling out by unions who are still seeking 3% across the board. There are also fears that some trusts may not implement the recommendations which could leave midwives vulnerable. The RCN has refused to participate in the joint union talks.
