Uncoupling protein-2 prevents neuronal death and diminishes brain dysfunction after stroke and brain trauma

Article Abstract:

A new function of Uncoupling Protien-2 (UCP-2), which was previously implicated in obesity, diabetes, inflammation and inhibition of cell death are described. It is found that UCP-2 reduces brain damage after experimental stroke and brain trauma, and alters mitochondrial release of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and activation of caspase-3.

HIV-1 Nef associated PAK and PI3-kinases stimulate Akt-independent Bad-phosphorylation to induce anti-apoptotic signals

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the role of Nef proteins in the disease progression of AIDS, focusing on the relationship between Nef and the activation of p21-activated kinase. Findings suggest that Nef can block apoptosis or cell death in T cells through the induction of Bad phosphorylation.

Caspase 8: the killer that you can't live without

Article Abstract:

Reactivating caspase 8 may be a promising treatment for neuroblastoma. This enzyme is involved in apoptosis, and researchers discovered that it was inactivated in many neuroblastoma patients with an amplified MYCN oncogene.
