Ultrasound and operative evaluation of arthritic shoulder joints

Article Abstract:

Ultrasound examination can reliably identify inflammatory changes in arthritic shoulder joints. Researchers compared preoperative ultrasonographic findings and arthritic changes evident at surgery in 20 shoulders of 20 patients. Ultrasound identified overgrowth and fluid accumulation in bursae and synovial membranes, rotator cuff tears, and biceps tendon ruptures that were then confirmed at surgery. Ultrasound is less effective in advanced rheumatoid arthritis, when mobility of the joint is limited and ultrasound cannot visualize all relevant joint structures.

Increased expression of human type IIa secretory phospholipase A2 antigen in arthritic synovium

Article Abstract:

Secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) may be an important enzyme in synovial membranes of patients with arthritis. Researchers compared samples of knee synovial membrane from patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or no arthritis. SPLA2 was more prominent in arthritic synovium than healthy synovium, and may be prominent in the inflammatory and destructive joint changes of arthritis.
