Trichomonas vaginalis: signs, tests and treatment

Article Abstract:

Trichomonas vaginalis is a flagellated protozoan which causes a common sexually-transmitted infection. It usually causes symptoms only in women, and appears to be transmitted only through heterosexual sex. Research indicates that the presence of the infection assists HIV-1 transmission. Symptoms of the infection include excessive vaginal discharge and local soreness. Identification of the infection involves microscopic examination of swabs taken from the vaginal walls, fornix and cervix. Treatment with metronidazole drugs is cheap, but there is evidence of resistance to these drugs.

Too hot to handle: ministers have been somewhat inept at handling the fiascos over HIV tests, the Pill and BSE

Article Abstract:

The Department of Health has been inept at handling a recent spate of mishaps. These began with concerns that certain brands of the Pill carried a small additional health risk, which led to an unprecedented increase in abortions and unplanned pregnancies. The issue of mad cow disease followed, with claims of a lack of prior consultation with vets, farmers and consumer groups. This was followed by the issue of faulty HIV tests which resulted in unnecessary anxiety for thousands of people.

Article Abstract:

Many research questions involve seeking differences between groups. The statistical hypothesis test suitable for testing for differences is the t-test which is in two forms relating to paired and unpaired data. Alternative methods, such as non-parametric methods, include the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney U test, which both have similar concepts.
