Article Abstract:

The nature of nursing practice is always changing and nursing education must also evolve accordingly. Assessment of nursing students is designed to test a student's competence and knowledge, but existing procedures may sometimes fail to fully assess clinical practice. The current continuous assessment of practice (CAP) has been criticised by both students and educators as being unreliable, focusing mainly on academic achievements rather than practical skills. The objective structured clinical evaluation is an advance on the CAP but should not be regarded as the sole means of assessment.

Putting the public interest first

Article Abstract:

The professional conduct committee of the UKCC, which deals with serious allegations of misconduct, places very strong emphasis on public interest. Its members must decide whether they believe the case presented by the defendant. If the accusation is proved, the committee must decide whether the facts constitute misconduct. A misconduct ruling will be made unless there are exceptional mitigating circumstances. Public protection is a particularly significant issue when deciding whether to caution the defendant or remove that person's name from the register.

Article Abstract:

A post-registration nursing student appreciates the value of teaching which mirrors the dynamic clinical environment. Pre-registration nursing students have no clinical experience from which to judge the teaching so they will not question its quality, but a more experienced nurse is aware of any gap between theory and practice. Tutors have a duty to their students' future patients to make sure that the clinical practice they are teaching is accurate and up-to-date.
