The write treatment

Article Abstract:

Nurses in hospitals and in the community need to promote patients' compliance with ulcer management programmes. Many patients do not understand the importance of factors including diet and exercise in wound healing and prevention of recurrence. They may be confused about whether to bathe or not, or they may not appreciate the benefits of analgesia. A literature review indicated that written information for patients is an important tool in promoting patient knowledge and treatment adherence. One study also shows the benefit of teaching sessions.

Working the system

Article Abstract:

1.5 people per 1,000 are estimated to have an active ulcer at any one time in Britain. The care given to a 74 year old patient with a chronic leg ulcer is described. The Roper nursing model was used to plan the patient's care, as accurate assessment is the key to successful treatment. This provided a holistic framework and allowed the development of an in-depth understanding of its correct use.
